MEN of the Ondo state Police Command, on
Monday in Akure, Ondo state capital arrested a middle aged man who
claimed to be a lunatic, while about 18 Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
cards of different banks was found on him.
It was gathered that the residents of Ijapo Estate who suspected the suspect to be a robber after they have monitored him loitering the area apprehended him and hand him over to the security agents at Ijapo Police station where the ATMs were found on him with some other items.
One of the residents who spoke to Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity, said the man was taken to the station after it was discovered that he was not actually insane and could not give genuine explanation about himself.
The source explained when the suspect was arrested, cash of various denominations were found in his possession with the ATM cards despite claiming to be a lunatic but said form the interrogation, the young man was not insane.
He said "after carefully looking at
the man, we discovered that he was a normal human being, because how could a
mad man be counting huge sum of money and also has different ATM cards in his
possession."
It was also gathered that some valuables including costly jewelry and clothes neatly packed in a bag by the suspect.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state Police command, Mr Femi Joseph confirmed the development and said the suspect has been arrested by his men and said the suspect would undergo medical test to ascertain his level of mental
fitness.
He said "we dont want to presume
that he is a mad man. there are medical tests he needs to undergo for us to
believe him. If at the end of the day he is found to be a robber as it is being
speculated he will face the wrath of the law."
Joseph said the arrest of the suspect was made possible through the co-operation of the residents of the area, saying that the suspect is currently being detained at the Ijapo Police post, where he is also being interrogated by his men.
