Emeka Ike debunks rumours of battering AGN secretary

Factional leader of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Ike has debunked  the rumours that he beat  up the secretary of the AGN, Samuel Onibiyo.
During the week, reports had it that crisis  reared its ugly head again in the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria barely nine months after Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike resumed as the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
Sources alleged that trouble between both parties began after the executive members of the Guild attended a church service in Onitsha and an argument had ensued between the national secretary and the president over what has been tagged negligence and constitutional breaches by the president.
It was further alleged that following the altercation between Ike and Onibiyo in the church, the president had joined forces with the chairman of the Anambra  State chapter of AGN, Browny, to inflict harm on the national secretary.
When Saturday Tribune contacted Emeka Ike, he dismissed the rumour, saying “the opposition would not stop spreading cheap details because it is directed to distract, rattle,  defocus the guild.
The actor further stated that “it is laughable because it is a ploy to distract. In fact it is nonsensical.”

Soso who has been with record label for more than five years until he was suspended last year is now back to take over from where he stopped. Though, no official statement has been released to that effect by Five Star, but the presence of Soso at the unveiling of Harrysong as the brand ambassador of Gala snack on Thursday lend credence to the rumours that Soso is back for good.

2016 budget: NASS moves against Aso Rock

LAWMAKERS in the National Assembly are said to be preparing a huge shock for the presidency as far as the final copy of the 2016 budget is concerned.

The lawmakers in the two chambers committed the budget to committee assignments last week after passing the document through the second reading.

Investigations at the National Assembly, however, confirmed that lawmakers are unhappy that they have been made to bear the brunt of all the ills that go with budgetary allocations year after year.

For instance, some of the lawmakers argued that whereas every sector of the budget in the 2016 estimates recorded between 10 and 30 percent increase, the budget of the National Assembly took a downward plunge from N130 billion in 2015 to N115 billion.

The lawmakers are also angry that while the National Assembly has been granted zero capital allocations in 2016, that of the Presidency rose from N8.3 billion and N8.9 billion in 2014 and 2015 to N19.1 billion in 2016.

Some of the lawmakers had also argued that the original budget that can be compared with that of 2016 is actually the 2014 Budget which was implemented in full by the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

They also argued that since the 2015 budget was signed into law in April, nothing concrete was spent from the budget by the previous administration, while the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari also largely sidelined the budget.

“Although some of the votes meant as expenses in the Villa are spread in different subheads,  including in the Service Wide votes, the lawmakers have decided to fish out all the expenses and straighten them as appropriate,” a lawmaker said last week.

For instance, the president, in the corrected version of the budget, moved the N3.7 billion meant for purchase of cars and spread same in the votes for the office of Chief of Staff and the Chief Security Officer to the President. A lawmaker said that the finances are being scrutinised to ensure that nothing untoward is allowed in the budget.

Other subheads already contained in the budget but which are seen as curious include the vote of N3.9 billion for renovation of the Villa in 2016.

The Committee on Inter-Governmental Affairs was already mandated to x-ray the Service Wide Votes and exclude any extraneous figures in the budget.

“Whereas the highest figure for the Villa under the previous governments stood at N33 billion, the current government in an austerity measure proposed a budget of N39.124 billion for the Presidential Villa,” a lawmaker noted, adding that the ingenuous development in the current administration is that various sums to be spent are located in departments outside the Presidency itself.

A source said that in view of the overt attention on the budget of the National Assembly, the lawmakers have decided to thoroughly examine the National Budget and remove any extraneous figures adding that any overhead that is seen as bogus would be reassigned or removed totally.

The media last week revealed the contents of a letter written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo  to the National Assembly in which he alleged lack of transparency in the budgetary process of the legislature.

He also accused the lawmakers of corruption, adding that their insistence on buying vehicles worth N4.7 billion was insensitive at this time.

However, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki replied the former President, insisting that the National Assembly has imbibed a culture of transparency.

Boko Haram bombers now disguise as mad people, military warns

THE military has alerted Nigerians of a new plan by Boko Haram terrorists to cause havoc by disguising as mad people.

According to a statement by Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, acting Director of Defence Information, the insurgents usually dress like mad persons in order to gain access to public areas to detonate improvised explosive devices.

Nigerian Tribune reports that “It has come to the notice of the Defence Headquarters that Boko Haram members, in their desperation to cause colossal havoc, have now devised a new method where they dress like mad persons to gain access to public areas to detonate bombs.

“The two male suicide bombers, who dressed like mad women and carried out suicide bomb attack in Gombi, Adamawa State, is instructive in this direction. Five people lost their lives and several others were wounded in the heinous attack by these ungodly people.

“The Defence Headquarters, therefore, urges our fellow good citizens across the country to be wary of mad persons approaching markets, public places or crowded areas so as to nip this ugly trend in the bud,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Airforce (NAF) has sustained aerial bombardment of Sambisda Forest with over 286 operational sorties conducted against terrorist target in the area in the last one month.

The Deputy Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao, who stated this at a media briefing in Maiduguri, Borno State, said that the air strikes and bombardments were conducted by the air component of the Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East.

AVM Amao said the ongoing air operations and surveillance within the theater of operation in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states were intensified between December 2015 and January 2016 towards ending the Boko Haram menace.

He said: “In continuation of the counter insurgency, the air component in the last one month conducted 286 operational sorties against terrorists’ targets from 25 December to date in the Sambisa forest, covering an area of 157,000 kilometre, which is equivalent to the total land mass of South Korea, Portugal and Togo, in a total of 536 hours, 21 minutes were flown by various platforms engaged in the operations.

“This translates into 316,637.5 litres of aviation fuel which amounts to N60.3 million, excluding the cost of maintenance and armament expended.”

He further explained that prominent operations among the missions carried out included an air strike on 25 December last year where some terrorists’ leaders and junior commanders, who gathered for a leadership meeting in Sambisa Forest, were attacked by a precision strike which led to the killing of several Boko Haram terrorists.

There was also a significant strike conducted on January 17, 2016 following intelligence report on the location of a High Value Terrorists l(Boko Haram HVT) leader taking refuge at a location South of Arra village in the Sambisa Forest, where air strikes neutralized the target.

He added that some areas of the successful airstrikes conducted to include: Gadzama,  Ngwalimiri, Dure and Dure Takwalla, Ajigin, Bitta, Gulumba Gana, Sigel, Damasak and Kumshe communities now occupied by insurgents.

Other areas that came under strike include; Yajiwa, Asaga, Tumbun Gini and Mada towns, amongst others, as well as medical evacuation missions which were also carried out at Marte Local Government area and Banki town of Borno state on 21 January this year.

Dasukigate: Stop defaming my sons- Obanikoro tells EFCC

Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has charged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to stop defaming his sons over the alleged payment of N4.75 billion by the office of former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sabo Dasuki, into their accounts, declaring that his sons received no such payment.

Reports in some national dailies had it that the EFCC had, through a discreet investigation, traced the money to the account of Silva McNamara Limited with links to the family of the former minister.

A source in the commission, according to the report, was said to have confided that the company had Gbolahan and Babajide, two sons of the former minister, on its board.

The former minister, in a reaction on Saturday through a statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Jonathan Eze, challenged the EFCC to publish, for public consumption, names of the directors and signatories to the alleged Silva McNamara Limited account as at when the N4.75bn was paid from the NSA office of the embattled former NSA, Col. Dasuki.

Obanikoro, who was also the immediate  Minister of State, Foreign Affairs and a former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, also challenged an online platform, Sahara Reporters, to do same, “instead of demonising and deceiving Nigerians with vague,  contrived and distorted information.”
Obanikoro, while expressing disappointment with what he described as “public political persecution” embarked upon by the two bodies, threatened to pursue what he further described as “injustice and infringements,” to a logical end at the court of law.

“I challenge the EFCC to publish in good conscience the signatories and the names of the directors of the said company and to restate that I shall conclusively pursue this injustice and infringements to a logical end,” he said.

Woman baths husband with Acid

THE woman who gave me a substance told me that it was a charm meant to endear my husband to me. I never knew that what she gave me was acid. All I was trying to do was to keep my husband’s love so that he would not think of leaving me, because I know that my marriage with any other man would not endure because of my barrenness.”

The victim, Olawale Shola and wife(inset) (the suspect) Remi Agunbiade

These were that words of Remi Agunbiade (38), a resident of Ita Barika, Foko area of Ibadan, Oyo State, after she was arrested by the policemen from Iyaganku Division over an alleged attempt to kill her husband, one Olawale Shola, by pouring acid on him on January 27, 2016.

The incident occurred less than 24 hours after a similar happening at Oje area of Ibadan where a man allegedly poured a bottle of acid on the mother of his two kids for reasons best known to him. But the difference is that while the Oje suspect ran away after committing the act, the Foko victim, Shola prevented his assailant from escaping as he ran after her and held her until neighbours came to assist him in preventing the lady from running away.
Crime Reports learnt that the Foko incident happened at about 9a.m while Shola was lying down in a room he stayed with his partner, Remi.

In an interview with Remi after her arrest, the lady, who also got some of the acid on her skin, claimed ignorance of the substance she poured on her partner, saying that she thought it was a love charm.

According to her, “I met Shola in 2003 and we have been together since then. He was the one who forced me to abort for him twice, and since then, I have not been able to get pregnant again. Then, he had a wife with two kids.

“When I had my first pregnancy, he said that his wife was also pregnant with their third child, asking me to abort mine, which I did. He used to schedule his stay between the two of us. We used to quarrel often and this got me worried because I knew that if he left me, I would not be able to have another steady relationship since no man would be willing to live with a barren woman.

“I met a lady called Iya Azeez at a provision stall at Agbeni market, Ibadan. During our discussion, I intimated her of my challenges and said that I didn’t want to leave my husband. She replied that I would have to resolve the issue through self-help. I asked for assistance to stop further quarrels between me and my husband and she said she would help me get water that had been prayed into from an Alfa, stating that all I would need to do is to sprinkle it on my husband, after which he would love me without holding anything back. She gave me a bottle containing the liquid substance on Tuesday, January 26.

“On Wednesday morning, my partner, Shola, was lying down when I took the bottle and poured the content on his head. He cried in agony from sleep and I also shouted and ran out. But he followed me and caught up with me beside the house next to ours.

“He asked people to help him hold me so that I would not run away. By then, a huge crowd had gathered and it was then they started saying that it was acid that I poured him. Some of the liquid got rubbed on my body when he held me, giving me some burns.”

The suspect claimed that she did not know the residence of the friend who gave her the purported bottle of liquid, saying that she only met the lady about two months ago. She confirmed that she quarrelled with her husband concerning accommodation, since she already told him that she was tired of living with him in a room she rented herself.

“I decided to pack everything out of the room to another place, leaving it bare. His friends intervened and he came to sleep in the room with me on Tuesday. My action was because I didn’t want to have another husband.”

She also disclosed that her husband started dating another lady in her neighbourhood about three years ago, and that the lady used to scorn her childlessness. Remi added that her husband rented a room for the lady.

Crime Reports was also at the Burns Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan where the victim was on admission. He narrated his experience thus: “Remi and I have been together for over 11 years. My relationship with her caused a friction between her and my first wife who has four children for me.

“I used to defend Remi anytime she had a quarrel with my first wife, especially because she had yet to have a child. At a time, I abandoned my first wife to be with Remi when the first wife cursed Remi and said she would never have any child till she would quit relationship with me.

“Also about three years ago, I started dating a lady. This caused Remi to be threatening her. She even went as far as quarrelling with the lady. Last year, I discovered that my first wife was already dating another man because of the neglect she suffered from me. As a result, I called Remi in October 2015 and told her that I would have to share days of the week between her and my first wife. Initially, she was angry at my suggestion but later said I should start in January 2016.

“I went to my first wife twice in January and by the I returned to Remi’s place, she had changed the lock and had packed all her belongings and mine. She also collected my phone from me under the pretext that she wanted to use it. After my friend’s intervention, she returned on Monday, January 25. But I went to sleep in the third lady’s house. On Tuesday, I went to Remi’s place and stayed there with her in the bare room.

“On Wednesday, I was lying down, waiting for a friend. Suddenly, I felt a warm liquid on me. As I opened my eyes, I saw as she was about to run out and I went after her. I raised the alarm and people came. I told them that she had already threatened that she would do an unforgettable thing to me. That was how I was rushed to the hospital.”

Shola admitted asking Remi to have an abortion in the past, but said it was only once.

The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the story, said that the suspect was still undergoing investigation, adding that she would be arraigned to court at the conclusion of investigation.

Ajisebutu warned members of the public against adopting acid as a weapon of revenge, saying that the act was criminal.

Speaking on Shola and the second patient, Abimbola, the Public Relations Officer of the UCH, Mr Deji Bobade assured that they would get the best of treatments. According to Bobade, “it is good that they have passed the critical stage. We hope that in a matter of days or weeks, depending on how fast the healing process is. they should be discharged home.”

I built a helipcopter, Radio Transmitter as a boy- I go die

By Celebrity Journalist- Ademola Olonilua

Comedian, Francis Agoda, popularly known by his stage name, I Go Dye, revealed to Saturday Beats he once declined a scholarship to study Structural Engineering at the University of New York.
“I probably could have died by now if I decided to become a Structural Engineer,” he said jokingly.
Revealing a surprising aspect of his life many may not be aware of, I Go Dye said he was the zonal project manager of the Junior Engineering Technical Society, which gave him an opportunity to express some parts of his talents – building things.

He claimed he built a miniature helicopter, a hovercraft, a radio transmitter, and a battery table fan, which were the efforts that earned him the scholarship in 1992.
But I Go Dye does not regret his choice one bit.
He said, “Academic pursuit depends on personal interest. I am still acquiring knowledge on a daily basis. There is no limit to educational quest. The truth of the matter is that life is a choice. Until you do things you love, you cannot really be happy. Those things I built at the time are still part of my life today. But I chose comedy because that is where my love lies.
“I started building things at the young age of about 12. At a point, I was no longer really comfortable with that path of life.

“When I left the village and came to the city, I imagined how to make life easier for my people. At a point, I realised that my heart was in comedy and decided to tow that path.
“When I declined that scholarship, I had started becoming interested in having an impact on the lives of people. When I left the village, and got to the city, Comedy became a platform through which I could give hope to people. I am happy with the choice I made.

“I have now spent 20 years on stage. I was first featured on A Night of a Thousand Laugh in 2000 and I started doing variety shows when I was in Class Three in the secondary school. People only know you when you become successful. They don’t really know the roads you passed through until you tell stories like this.”

Lolo of Wazobia FM speaks on beef with Comedian, Princess

Do you think Nigerian comedians are united?
Is unity the only criterion for success? Everybody is pushing his or her boundaries individually. We all have a good working relationship and that is what is key. Comedy is individual, except when your brand is tied to another person, that’s when you work in a team. But, most brands are singular in nature, but of course we are united in projecting the comedy industry. We are the little parts that make up the big picture, which is the Nigerian comedy industry.
You recently called out your fellow comedian, Princess, on Twitter. What were you particularly unhappy about?
Sometimes, women have issues. At an event which held this month, she caused me to feel awkward. I felt slighted because her action was unnecessary. I had to give vent to my anger because I am human. Some of our colleagues waded into the matter and I believe that our differences will be sorted out. We’re human beings and we are bound to hurt each other at some point. But, we have to let it go and keep the ball rolling.

Do you think there should be a form of quality control in the type of jokes a comedian delivers?
How do you control the quality of an individual’s creative content? Comedy is individualistic in nature and the audience who is the recipient of the joke, is the judge and in control. As long as they find your jokes interesting, then you’re in business.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently on the set of Jenifa’s Diaries with Funke Akindele. I am also working on my own TV show, theGudu Morning Naija show on Wazobia TV; it is a breakfast magazine show that deals with politics, news, entertainment and health. I’m also working on a play, which will be staged later in the year while the Lagos and London edition of OgaMadamLive is currently in the works.

WHAT I WANT IN A MAN- YEMI ALADE

Yemi Alade entered the Nigerian music scene in 2009 after emerging  winner in a Peak Talent Hunt series and has been improving on her craft since then. In this interview with JOAN OMIONAWELE of Saturday Tribune, the award-winning musician talks about her new business line, music career, personal life, among other issues. Excerpts:

You launched the Yemi Alade Collection sometime last year, what is it about?
Yes o.  Una know say na music I dey do regularly, but it is good to involve yourself in some other things that people can actually see and keep. Music is a combination of audiovisuals, so you cannot exactly hold on to it, but with my jewellery collection which is special, people can see and hold on to it. It is also very special because it has my autograph on it, instead of autograghing cds and albums, my autograph is engraved at the back, so it is like a gift from me to my fans.

Why did you venture into jewellery business?
It is basically because of my love for African fashion. I discovered that whenever I go to other African countries to perform, they usually try to replicate my style, so this time, I decided to make something for them and myself as well. So I decided to collaborate with Brand2Glam, because I have been the brand’s ambassador for almost two years now.So the collection is about my personality, my style and because my style is different, we have decided to make it available to my fans.

I am an African woman, but I don’t wear Iro and Buba about, so I have decided to mix both African and modern culture together, and call it Afropolitan “The African woman meets the metropolis’’

Your signature and style are unique, where do you get your inspiration from?
It’s usually not planned but when it comes to my style, whenever I see something African, I like it, but most times I create my hairstyles especially. But for my videos, I sketch my outfits and bring them to life. But I’m basically inspired by my environment, even when I got to South Africa and Kenya, I was inspired by their rich beads

Who are your target?
It is for the complex African woman with style, I say African because it is African but it is for the whole world.  I am very excited for the new project and I am very sure that a lot of people will love it.

We see lots of celebrities who feel that they have made so much money, rushing into business. What makes your product stand out from the others?
Two things. I don’t think I have gotten to the point where I will say I don make money, I wan look for another thing. You keep growing the brand. There are some people who have recharge card business and still sell other things on the side and have their children handling ‘mama put’ business. Most artistes don’t really branch out. So this is about giving what I can at this stage that I can.

Then if you watch my videos, you will see that my style is very unique. But if you see the pieces, you will understand.

How do you hope to balance this with being a musician?
I’m very good at multitasking. In the morning I still go to the kitchen and do my things myself. I am currently talking to someone for a shoeline and talking to other people for other business opportunities. I am everywhere. I must use my youth well. I lost my dad at a young age and so, I am like my mother’s father and husband. I have a business partner who will take care of it because she understands my work.
How affordable are the pieces of jewellery for the average Nigerian lady who just wants to be fashionable?
The Yemi Alade brand will associate with anyone and everyones, be they Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Ghanaians, South African. I don’t portray myself as being ostentatious and this is to assure you that this will be affordable as being overly expensive doesn’t correlate with my brand. For everyone who loves Yemi Alade, they will be able to get a piece of it.

Last year 2015 was an explosive year for you, did you ever think that you would go this far?
Well, for me and my dreams, we don’t have a limit, I don’t know where, when or how, I am just here experiencing God. I did not know where I was going to get to, but I have not gotten where I want to be yet.

Where do you  see yourself in the next five years?
I see myself topping the music chat internationally, and maybe I would have bagged a Grammy or two.

You are arguably one of the busiest female musicians in the country, how do you unwind?
I am hardly at home. So whenever I get the opportunity and time to stay at home, I try to rest and eat good food

What attracts you to a man?
I like my man who is God-fearing,  has a good sense of style, good sense of  humour, one that has ambition and purpose. He must show it and not just talk about it.

How did you venture into music?
It all started in 2009 when I won the Peak Talent show and that was when it became more serious and I decided to turn my hobby into a career. I got my first record deal in 2011 and since then, it has been from grace to grace.

Your most embarrassing moment on stage?
I tried to do a split on stage and the next thing, my outfit got torn and my shorts did a full split.

How did you manage the situation?
I just waka slowly Komot for stage, no one knew anything. I stood up gracefully and left.

And your most memorable moment on stage?
It has been a beautiful experience for me, especially with the awards and winning the 2015 Best Female in Africa at the MTV awards in Durban and that has been a huge one for me and my team. I was also nominated alongside Beyonce  and Nikki Minaj for an award in Europe. Other than that, I just thank God for life.

What have your challenges been?
It is really hard to produce music when you are constantly travelling, I mean it is hard going back to the studio to produce music. Every other week I am in another country. It has been a bit of a challenge, but we are making it work. There isn’t enough time on the clock anymore.

It was our pastor who asked us to get married —Husband •Dissolve the marriage in our own interest —Wife

A man, Felix Anyanwu, has approached an Ejigbo customary court sitting in Lagos State for the dissolution of his marriage to his wife, Angela.

Anyanwu told the court that he and his wife, Angela, were members of the same church before they got married but that he did not recognise her until one Sunday during a church service.

He said their pastor asked both of them to stand up before the congregation and prophesied to them that God told him that they were husband and wife and they should immediately start preparations for wedding.

Both of them believed their pastor and embarked on both traditional and church wedding which was successful. Anyanwu said after the wedding, they discovered that they were strange bedfellows who have no feelings for each other.

He said they managed to stay together for three years because Angela became pregnant and had a child.
He said after nursing their baby for three years, she packed her property and left with the child and since then she did not return to her matrimonial home. Meanwhile, he did not look for her either.Anyanwu asked the court to dissolve the marriage and allow Angela to take custody of the child and grant him access to the child only.

Angela in her response, did not object to the dissolution of the marriage and said it was better it was dissolved in their own interest.President of the court, Mrs. Banjoko Salewa adjourned the matter for counselling and hearing.

Wizkid’s second baby mama responds to new baby rumours

Nigerian rapper, Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has been in the news since the year began and it has been reported that he just fathered his second baby boy by his lover, Binta Diamond Diallo.

According to The Shade Room, an entertainment online medium in the US, which spoke to Binta, the mother of Wizkid’s new child, she named her son, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun Jr. after the rapper in part so that he doesn’t try it with her like he did with the mother of his first child.

It will be recalled that Wizkid fathered a child with an undergraduate, Oluwanishola Ogudugu  which he denied till he eventually owned up  on social media. He finally said “hey, the child’s mine guys, I’m done hiding him [from] you all.” You ain’tgottalie (sic), Craig!

Saturday Tribune further gathered  that Wizkid  has been dating Binta  for two years. She told The Shade Room online that when she learned that she was pregnant in 2015, the rapper said that he was going to embrace being a dad this time  and that he’d certainly care for the child. But not only has he not seen his son yet, but he hasn’t shown much interest in being a father. However,  Binta says she wants that to change, as  she just wants him to man his responsibilities.

Register intellectual property to avoid theft —Gbenga Adeyinka

One of Nigeria’s A-list comedians, Gbenga Adeyinka, has urged entertainers in the industry to register their ideas, songs, videos and other intellectual properties with the copyright commission to avoid theft and rancour amongst industry mates.

He made the call in a close session with Saturday Tribune at a press conference held during the week at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, following the multiple cases of song thefts recorded in the music industry.

Mr Adeyinka noted that the copyright breach in the industry was as a result of lack of awareness to available safety measures for copyright protection in the country. The comedian who also stated that the copyright act  infringement was not peculiar to entertainers in the music and movie industry, maintains that comedians are also guilty of the same crime.

He enjoined those who use other people’s ideas and songs to always acknowledge source where necessary.

I will say in Yoruba, ‘nko ti a ba fi sile la’aja n gbe’. I can’t sing Konkonbilo. I can’t go to the studio to sing Emergency. Everybody knows it is a Dbanj song. I think this is a call for us to do the right thing. Let’s try to register our works. Let’s have copyright for our songs, videos and intellectual properties,” he said, “you will discover,” he continued, “that it is not expensive to get your songs and ideas registered. It doesn’t cost over N1000 or N2000 to register your work with the copyright commission. I have done that myself.”

“Yes. Comedians also steal comedies. The truth is you cannot thrive only on your jokes. Sometimes, we are bound to borrow materials from others. What I do and what I want to encourage others to do is to try to acknowledge your source. Bros, e no hard na. Make we stop all the fighting and hating”

The founder of Lafftamatazz, the TV comedy show, however, blamed the New Year controversies as entertainers’ desperate move for attention.

“For me, I think this is part of the New Year hype. Everybody wants to be in the news. I think we can be in the news for something better,” he said.

CAN SEX CAUSE HEART ATTACK

BY Blessing Ekum

Sex is one of nature’s multi-purpose gifts of pleasure to humanity but sometimes, cases of a  person developing a heart attack and dying while on the activity are heard of. This not only causes some anxiety, but has birthed several myths about sex and heart attacks. However, experts have said that sex is rarely the cause of a heart attack, and most heart disease patients are safe to resume sexual activity after a heart attack.

This disclosure was made in a research letter published recently in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Sexual activity can be a concern for many heart attack patients who worry about exertion triggering another heart event, but data on the harms and benefits of sexual activity in heart disease patients is limited. According to the research letter, sexual activity generally involves moderate physical activity comparable to climbing two staircases or taking a brisk walk.

Livescience reports that the researchers looked at 536 heart disease patients between 30 and 70 years old to evaluate sexual activity in the 12 months before a heart attack and estimate the association of frequency of sexual activity with subsequent cardiovascular events, including fatal heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death.

In a self-reported questionnaire, 14.9 per cent of patients reported no sexual activity in the 12 months before their heart attack, 4.7 per cent reported sex less than once per month, 25.4 per cent reported less than once per week and 55 per cent reported one or more times per week. During 10 years of follow up, 100 adverse cardiovascular events occurred in patients in the study. Sexual activity was not a risk factor for subsequent adverse cardiovascular events.

Researchers also evaluated the timing of the last sexual activity before the heart attack. Only 0.7 per cent reported sex within an hour before their heart attack. In comparison, over 78 per cent reported that their last sexual activity occurred more than 24 hours before the heart attack.

“Based on our data, it seems very unlikely that sexual activity is a relevant trigger of heart attack,” said Dietrich Rothenbacher, M.D., M.P.H., lead author of the study and professor and chair of the Institute of Epidemiology and Medical Biometry at Ulm University in Ulm, Germany. “Less than half of men and less than a third of women are getting information about sexual activity after heart attack from their doctors. It is important to reassure patients that they need not be worried and should resume their usual sexual activity.”

Dr Funmilayo Akinola, a medical practitioner, said “most of the time, when people die of a heart attack during sex, it’s not sex that’s the cause. It has been discovered that such people, who most times are men, are having illicit sex, that is, they are cheating on their partners. So, the anxiety associated with doing something ‘forbidden’ , the possibility of being caught, guilt, coupled with increased blood pressure, pulse and respiration that occurs during sex can contribute to having a heart problem at the time. However, men over 50 years, who are overweight and do not get sufficient exercise can exert the heart during an intense sex session. The case of sex and the heart should be more of a concern for someone who previously had a heart disease. He has to be clear with his cardiologist about what activities he can take and which he shouldn’t.”

Researchers said that despite the benefits of sexual activity outweighing risks, the potential of erectile dysfunction as a side effect from various cardiovascular protective medications and the risk of a drop in blood pressure from combining certain heart medications with erectile dysfunction medications should be clearly communicated to patients.

Buhari fighting insurgency with the arms I bought – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, said President Muhhamadu Buhari administration’s is prosecuting the war against the Boko Haram insurgency with the arms his administration procured .
Insisting that he laid a solid foundation for terrorism to be defeated, Dr Jonathan expressed hope that very soon, the new government would defeat the insurgency.
Jonathan, who spoke in an interview with France 24 as quoted by The Cable, said the insurgency caught the country unawares but noted that his government laid a solid foundation for terrorism to be defeated.
His words: “The new government is working hard and I believe they are still using the equipment we procured. Though the budget is still being debated, no new equipment has been bought, so even those equipment the president is using to prosecute the war against Boko Haram are those equipment we procured
“When Boko Haram started in Nigeria, we had no terror experience. Yes, we had armed robbery and other common crimes, but terrorism was different because the people involved were not afraid to die. So, you need a different mechanism to confront terrorism, you need superior technology to be able to stop them even before the attack. We never had the equipment, but when we were confronted, we started acquiring and before I left office we built reasonable capacity and I believe with what we left behind and also with what the new government will acquire, they will be able to prosecute this terror war to a reasonable conclusion.”

Tompolo makes u-turn ready to face EFCC

FORMER General Officer Commanding, GOC, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, Government Ekpumupolo, alias Tompolo, made a volte face, Thursday, saying he would appear before the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, which issued a bench warrant for his arrest, January 14, but “at the appropriate time.”
The bench warrant followed an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which had filed different charges against Tompolo, including diversion of N34 billion belonging to the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency, NIMASA to personal use and laundering of N22.6 billion.
Tompolo, who spoke through his Media Adviser and Consultant, Mr. Paul Bebenimibo also said he would never commence war against the Federal Government having accepted amnesty in 2009, reiterating that he was not party to the recent three-day bombing of crude oil and gas pipelines in Delta state.
“Tompolo has no reason to bomb pipelines because of EFCC case, he knows he is innocent. As he has stated in several occasions, he will appear in court at the appropriate time as his lawyers are working towards that,” he said.
Before now, Tompolo had said, “The truth of the matter is that I do not know anything about the N34 billion naira EFCC is talking about, first, it was 13 billion issue, now it is 34 billion. I am not a signatory to any of the companies mentioned in the said 34 billion case. So I do not know where this one is coming from.”
Reacting to the allegation by another ex-militant leader, Africanus Ukparasia, aliast “General” Africa that he bombed pipelines, Tompolo said he alerted the public that some aggrieved All Progressives Congress, APC, members in Bayesla and Delta states want to destroy national assestsin the Niger Delta state and finger him because of the outcome of the Bayelsa governorship election.
According to the statement, “And true to his fears, these set of APC chieftains that joined the party immediately after the presidential election of 2015 were the first people to accuse him of bombing the pipelines to divert public attention.”
On speed boats for war
Tompolo said “it is the biggest lie of the year, as the military is also aware of the boats and pick-up vans he purchased in 2011 for the surveillance of oil facilities as he was working hand in hand with the military then.
“Tompolo is a man of peace and he is poised for the development of the coastal Niger Delta region. He prays that this matter be amicably resolved so that everyone will know that he always put his people above his person gains.”
“And true to his fears, these set of APC chieftains that joined the party immediately after the presidential election of 2015, were the first people to accuse him of bombing the pipelines to divert public attention.
“These new APC members who the former chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, described as parasites, also threatened to cause problem in the Niger Delta region if the pipeline surveillance contract in Delta State already awarded to Messers Ocean Marine Solution is not re-awarded to them.
This is a clear testimony of their involvement in the bombing of the pipelines. Since then, we all have seen their role in misleading the military and the general public.
“Now, it could be recalled that this same Africanus Ukparasia threatened Tompolo not to show interest in the elections, as he was a strong supporter of the APC candidate. He killed and maimed fellow Ijaw people because of a governorship election, and now he is the one accusing Tompolo of bombing pipelines.”

EFCC detains ex-Chief of Air Staff, Amosu over arms procurement

Abuja – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained the immediate past Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu
Amosu was detained as he honored EFCC invitation on Wednesday.
A senior operative with the commission told Vanguard that. Amosu had been helping them in their investigation into the procurement of arms for the armed forces between 2007 and 2015‎.
The NAF under Amosu is alleged to have admitted receiving non-existent ammunition and aircraft, a development which a presidential panel frowned at.

A source in EFCC told Vanguard that Amosu was invited on Wednesday over the amount which was allegedly used under his leadership for arms procurement worth N29 billion.
He is said to have made a statement under caution to the EFCC operatives but was not allowed to go‎ home, an indication that they were not satisfied with his statement.
‎President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the probe of arms procurement and the panel has returned a damning verdict indicting top military and political actors who are being tried in court.

Many other top military officers named in the arms scam have had their property sealed as a first step towards confiscating them.

B’Haram: Convicted Kabiru Sokoto accuses FG of delaying his appeal

A member of the dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram, Kabiru Umar, also known as Kabiru Sokoto, who was convicted in 2013 for terrorism activities has accused the Federal Government of delaying his efforts to appeal his conviction and sentence.
Umar was on December 20, 2013 sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja for his role in the  2011 Christmas Day bomb blast at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State.
The bomb attack was said to have left about 44 persons killed and 75 others wounded.
He has, through his lawyer, Sheriff Okoh, before the Federal High Court, Abuja, alleged that the Comptroller of Prisons and his men had made it impossible to access his lawyer, to enable him perfect his appeal process.
The application had as respondents the Comptroller General of Prisons  and the Attorney General of the Federation.
Sokoto, who is currently serving a life imprisonment term at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos, is through his application, seeking an order compelling the respondents to allow him access to his lawyer.
The Punch reports that he also seeks a declaration that the respondents’ alleged decision to deny him access to his lawyer was a violation of his right to a fair hearing, right to counsel and access to justice.
Okoh, in a supporting affidavit which he personally deposed to, alleged that all the applications made to the CGP seeking an access to the convict as his lawyer were turned down.
The affidavit read in part, “We have made several personal contacts with the first defendant (the Comptroller General of Prison), his men: S. N. Nwanchukwu , E. O. Ogundele, among others, at the Nigeria Prisons headquarters, Abuja in a bid to persuade them to permit us to see the applicant, but they kept making us indulge in fruitless returns for approvals from the 2nd respondent (AGF) that has not come for over two years.
“Wherefore, we verily believe that their actions are aimed at ensuring that the applicant’s appeal of his conviction and sentence continues to be frustrated in perpetuity.
The applicant’s appeal before the Court of Appeal is being delayed as a result of the conduct of the 1st respondent and men under his command and supervision.”
Justice Ademola had, in his judgment sentencing Umar to life imprisonment,  held that he was satisfied that the Federal Government, successfully established the culpability of the convict beyond every reasonable doubt.
The judge noted that Umar had earlier in two separate confessional statements, admitted that he had prior knowledge of the attack.
The judge noted that Sokoto never showed any remorse for his actions throughout the trial, and described him (Sokoto) as “a pathological liar with no regards for the truth.”
Dissatisfied, Sokoto filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal, Abuja.
On Thursday, when the case was mentioned in court, the presiding judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, observed that there was no evidence that respondents were served with processes (court documents) in the case.
He directed the applicant’s lawyer to ensure service of the processes on the respondents and return on February 4 for the hearing of the motion.
