Mariah Carey is not going to be a typical
bride, just as her wedding is not going to be an every day one.
It’s perhaps never been heard of a couple
planning to have three wedding ceremonies at different locations of the world.
But this is exactly what the 45-year-old
American singer is planning with her Australian billionaire fiancé, James
Packer.
According to reports, Carey is planning the
biggest wedding in history, boasting three ceremonies.
This might not be totally surprising
because just last month, she got a $10m (N2bn) 35-carat diamond engagement ring
from the 48-year-old Australian big boy.
Joking about it herself, Carey spoke of the
ring, “It’s so heavy I can’t lift my arm up.”
It all went down in New York City— where
Packer secretly rounded up a bunch of Mariah’s close friends for a private
dinner so he could get down on one knee and propose in front of the most
special people in her life.
Carey and Packer started dating in June
2015, but their relationship heated up real quick, with the two famously
spending several consecutive weeks together on his yacht over the summer.
There’s something common about the couple —
this will be Carey’s third marriage, and Packer had also married twice before.
Packer is Australia’s 4th richest man —
worth $3.5bn (N700bn) — thanks to a combination of a $5bn (N1tn) inheritance
from his father and his own successes in real estate, casinos and
entertainment.
As for the wedding, there are reports that
it will happen soon this year, a source told a British magazine,Heat.
“She wants the biggest wedding in history.
She has every intention of playing the ‘billion dollar bride’ and James has
given her an unlimited budget,”the insider said, adding that the pair want
three special days of celebration.
“The first wedding will be in Australia.
They’ll fly everyone to Sydney by private jet and then close off several nearby
beaches. Mariah wants one room filled with desserts and another filled with
lobster flown from Maine. Then, there will be a wedding in Disneyland,
California, where vows will be overseen by Minnie and Mickey Mouse. Mariah will
stay in the exclusive Cinderella Castle Suite, where she’ll be treated to a
white-chocolate Cinderella carriage and the toilet is an actual golden throne.”
Expectedly, Carey’s big day will feature
some A-list musical guests.
“The Disney wedding is going to be like
nothing Hollywood’s ever seen,” the source said. “Mariah wants Beyonce, Kanye
West, Michael Buble, Elton John and Prince to do a small set. She’s also
planning to fly the New York Symphony in to play while she walks down the
aisle, and there will be performances from Cirque de Soleil, plus fireworks
spelling out their names across the sky.”
The final event will be held in Las Vegas
and, unsurprisingly, it’s also going to be lavish.
“That’ll be followed by a final ceremony in
Las Vegas, where they’re going to take over Caesars Palace,” the source said.
“Mariah wants staff to dress up as characters from Cleopatra’s time, so guests
will be served by handmaidens and looked after by gladiator guards.”
Carey: Best-selling female artist in
history
Apart from being a singer, she is also a
songwriter, record producer, and actress who rose to prominence after the
release of the first single taken from her eponymous debut album in 1990,
“Vision of Love.”
More than two decades later, Rolling
Stonemagazine defined the song as an influence on “virtually every other female
R&B singer since the nineties.”
Carey produced four chart-topping singles
in the United States and began what would become a string of commercially
successful albums.
She and the group, Boyz II Men, spent a
record 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100list with “One Sweet Day”, which
remains the longest-running number-one song in the US chart history.
In 1998, she was honoured as the world’s
best-selling recording artist of the 1990s at the World Music Awards and
subsequently named the best-selling female artist of the millennium in 2000.
After a relatively unsuccessful period
between 2000 and 2004, she returned to the top of music charts with “The
Emancipation of Mimi”in 2005.
The album became the best-selling album in
the US and the second best-seller worldwide. In 2005, she produced “We Belong
Together”, which became her most successful single of the 2000s, and was later
named “Song of the Decade” by Billboard.
Throughout her career, she has sold more
than 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music
artists of all time.
According to records, she is the
third-best-selling female artist in the US, with 63.5 million certified albums.
With the release of “Touch My Body” (2008), Carey gained her 18th number-one
single in the US, more than any other solo artist. In 2012, she was ranked
second on a list of the “100 Greatest Women in Music.”
Aside from her commercial accomplishments,
she has won five Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 11 American Music
Awards, and 14 Billboard Music Awards and has been consistently credited with
inspiring a generation of singers. Referred to as the “songbird supreme” by the
Guinness World Records, she is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power,
melismatic style and signature use of the whistle register.
Meanwhile, Carey said in 2006 that she’s a
born-again Christian, stating, “I do believe that I have been born again in a
lot of ways. I think what I’ve changed are my priorities and my relationships
with God. I feel the difference when I don’t have my private moments to pray.
I’m a fighter, but I learned that I’m not in charge. Whatever God wants to
happen is what’s going to happen. I feel like I’ve had endless second, third,
fourth, fifth and sixth chances. It’s by the grace of God I’m still here.”
Lifestyle, homes and cars
Carey is not a poor singer. Worth about
$520m (N104bn), she can afford whatever she needs in life — so having exquisite
homes, posh SUVs, sports cars and a private jet shouldn’t catch one by
surprise.
It is said that her home in New York is
luxury personified, with the design looking like a five-star hotel in Dubai.
Dedicated to luxury, the entrance hall is decorated with a palm frond
chandelier, along with an Art Deco table with a carved and glided base, and
bronze inlaid limestone flooring.
Her clothes room is like a boutique on its
own, with everything on view and arranged by colour and type, while her shoe
room is filled with about a thousand pairs of super-expensive shoes.
The singer also has a $5m (N1bn) mansion in
the Bahamas, and another $125m (N25bn) one in Beverly Hills, California, USA.
There is another $15m home the singer has
in New York, where she has neighbours such as fellow singers: Jennifer Lopez,
Madonna and Sean Combs.
On cars, Carey has spent millions of
dollars. She owns a customised Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, a sleek
Maybach 625, a bulbous pink Porsche Cayenne SUV, and a Rolls Royce Phantom (not
a coupe).
She also owns an elegant Mercedes-Benz SLK,
which she received as a birthday gift from her ex-husband, Nick Cannon.
